Making the decision to leave your kids home alone is a pretty big step. Making the decision that they are able to handle themselves in the house can be quite a difficult one to take. Having said that, it is vital that children at some point learn how to be able to handle themselves when they’re home alone and what they need to do to remain safe at all times. Here are some tips on how you can ensure that your children are safe when they’re home alone.

Security Kids Home AloneKeep It Short

When you are leaving them alone for the first few times, try and keep it short. Make it just 30 minutes or so and then increase how long you’re away depending on the results. Seeing that they are able to handle themselves over a short period will give you a little more confidence that they will be fine for longer periods. Simple trial and error is the best way to handle this until you and your children feel more comfortable about being in the house by themselves.

Remind Them Of Safety Rules

Naturally you will have some safety rules for around the house. Make sure that you remind them of these every time you are planning to leave. They may express boredom or annoyance that they’re being told over and over again, but it is important. The more often you tell them, the more likely they are that they will pay attention and keep themselves safe.

Check Your Home

Before you leave, make sure that everything is as safe and secure as you want it to be. Make sure that all the windows and doors are locked properly. If you’re using some aspects of your security system, make sure that that is working properly as well.

Organize Check-In Times

Organize with your children when you will call them and make sure they are okay. You might want to do this at the top of every hour you are away, or just a select few times while you’re out. If you wanted to, you could leave the responsibility for this with your children and ask them to call you at specific times. This could be a great way of making them a little more responsible as well.

Stay Off Social Media

This is something that both you and your children should do. If you or your children will be using social media, make sure that none of you at any point mention that they are home alone. This should remain information that is between you and your children at all times.
